How to start traveling as a beginner CST

Questions to ask your recruiter

  • How many travelers have worked there before?

  • What cases will I scrub the most?

  • What service lines does the OR mainly focus on?

  • Is call required? If so, how often?

  • What is the call pay rate?

  • Are hours guaranteed if my shift gets cancelled?

  • How many shifts can the hospital cancel per contract?

  • What charting system does the hospital use?

  • What equipment or specialty systems do they use (robotics, ortho systems, etc.)?

  • How long is orientation for travelers?

  • Will I be expected to precept or train staff?

  • What is the weekly pay breakdown (taxed vs stipend)?

  • What is the weekly housing stipend amount?

  • What is the meals and incidentals stipend?

  • Are the stipends tax-free and based on the GSA rates for that location?***

  • Does the stipend change if I miss a shift or get cancelled?

  • Is there travel reimbursement to and from the assignment?

  • Are there extension opportunities if the contract goes well?

  • Have other CST travelers successfully finished contracts at this hospital?

*** GSA rates are government-set limits for how much money can be paid for housing and daily expenses when traveling for work.
